View Full Version : New Theoben Trigger Coming?

I'm on the fence of buying a new Theoben Evolution but the last time I bought a Theoben they came out with a new model of the Rapid just two months later ....
I'm determined not to make this mistake again, so I was wondering if Theoben made any news at the Shot Show this year about new stuff coming down the pipeline (read new trigger group for the break barrels)...
I just read that there is a massive gun show coming soon in UK which is like their version of the Shot Show at the end of the month. Perhaps they'll make any new announcements on their home turf?
Of course rumors on a new Evolution trigger have been around for years but I was wondering if anybody had any insider info.
Then again, I could do the world a favor and just buy one because then Theoben is about 99.9% guaranteed to release new triggers for their breakbarrels within 60 days of my purchase... though I'm a little selfish.

Phew it's been a while since I've been on here.
Just wanted to say I went for it, and I love it (had the trigger reworked before it was sent to me). It is a tricky trigger, but after a little practice it's easy to figure out.
I can't recommend this gun highly enough!

I won't hold my breath on new break barrel models from Theoben. Rapid was around forever and nothing or very little was changed except for nomenclature, stocks, finishes, and seal material. Same thing with break-barrels. It took them what, two decades to improve the trigger? Go figure. They are very conservative in design and research. They have all corners covered, however, HP Eliminator, MP Crusader, and LP Evolution, not to mention they also have SLR...

Pokerpot, did the new Evolution that you purchased come with the brand new upgraded Evolution trigger?

Hello Parallax,
I ordered a new walnut stock Evolution from SS in May of this year. I asked the question about the new trigger and was told by SS that they knew nothing about a new trigger. My thoughts were that if my new order didn't have the new trigger I would wait, as I didn't want the new trigger to show up 2 weeks after my new purchase. I contacted David Slade and he told me that the new Evoluton 2 trigger had been coming into the United States since Feb of this year. He told me that the sear and piston angles had been modified, resulting in a marked improvement. Therefore, I just assumed that I was getting the new trigger from SS. I have no way of knowing how to tell the difference. I'm assuming that the new Evo ordered from SS has the new trigger as to what David Slade told me, but I just don't know. If they were coming into the USA since Feb, then I would assume that when SS ordered mine in May, I would have it. Thats my thoughts anyway. It shoots wonderfully by the way.

Cool, thanks for the info Lipton. How's your Crusader shooting, btw? That looks like such a nice rifle too.

Parallax,
My Crusader Chrony numbers...
Crossman Premiers
Low 743.45 fps
Hi 762.90 fps
Average 750.05 fps
19.45 EP
5.56 SD
About 18 FP at the muzzle
Field Target Specials
Low 874.70 fps
Hi 891.25 fps
Average 882.96 fps
16.55 EP
6.16 SD
About 19.4 FP at the muzzle
Both pellets are very accurate. Either one will out shoot me so to speak. The premiers seem to group a little tighter at longer distances although a little more testing is still needed.
The trigger has been tuned by David Slade and it works very well for me. This is a pretty powerful rifle, fun to shoot and deadly accurate. Obviously it isn't an air rifle that you would shoot all afternoon as the cocking effort becomes a work out, but it isn't intended for an all day plinker, LOL. When I want to do that I spread my time between my Evo & R7's.

I like the new springer trigger. I like the new Theoben Sabre a lot and "I" (just my thoughts) think it will be for sale this year.

What if the new trigger sucked and the old one was fantastic but impossible to get? You better buy both.

Well, that really isn't a new trigger. It's the same trigger, reworked by Theoben. We knew about the reworked trigger but not about a "new" trigger. What we didn't know was when the guns were going to show up with the reworked trigger. It's good to remember that this project had been talked for a LONG time. Getting to it takes some time and Craig and I take the attitude with all changes that we'll believe it when we're holding it in our hot little hands. And if nobody tells us it's been done on the guns shipped to us, then we simply don't have no way of knowing.

Never understood complaints about "bad" Theoben triggers. They are good straight from the box. The one on Evolution I had broke cleanly at 1.5 lbs and David Slade works wonders on them if someone is that picky... Why expect a Match grade trigger on the rifle designed primarily for the hunting crowd..?

Ambush Hunter,
I'm with you. This complaining about Theoben triggers is patent nonsene and actually absurd. I think it stems from 2 main things.
First, most guys simply repeat what they read on a chat forum. Some guy complains that he doesn't like the trigger on his new Theoben and if he's a known chat forum person, his viewpoint gets repeated as "truth" by 8 dozen other posters and we're off and running based on the opinion of one or two guys. Chat forums repeat a lot of utter nonsense from time to time.
Secondly, I truly believe most guys simply get used to a certain trigger like the Weihrauch Rekord trigger which has been around a long time and then they buy a different gun with a different trigger and immediately complain that it isn't exactly what they are used to therefore it must be "bad".
A couple of guys actually compared the trigger let-off on their Theoben's to their Beeman/Weihrauch Rekord triggers and found that the Theoben trigger actually had a lighter let-off. Unfortunately most guys spend more time on their keyboards than shooting their guns, so they don't give themselves time to get used to a new trigger. And I've never understood why they don't just adjust their trigger's if it's important or maybe just shoot the gun a few hundred times to get the feel of it. My .22 rimfire trigger is different than my shotgun triggers and my deer rifle triggers. But they're all good...just not exactly the same so it takes shooting them for awhile to get used to each one.
Bottom line is that most of this "bad trigger" stuff is in somebody's head, not in the trigger. It's more likely that Theoben made some slight modifications to their existing trigger to offset the negative perception about "bad triggers" than because the triggers needed modification. Sometimes the reality is that doing some small change is needed so that people can then feel good about saying the item is "improved" even when it's questionable whether the items needed a change or not. Why fight the perception? Make a small change or two and life is good again....until the complaint cycle revs up again.

Agreed with the above. I think most people get poor results with their rifles due to poor trigger discipline. While I enjoy the Rekord trigger on my R9 I actually prefer the tactile feel of my Beeman Kodiak, a trigger unit with a somewhat middling reputation. Yes the trigger is heavier but it's very smooth with no creep and delivers accuracy if I do my part. Moral of story, hit the range instead of the keyboard!

This is just my opinion, and no, I'm not a trigger snob.
The Theoben trigger on my SLR 98, even tuned by Dave Slade, is way too sloppy for a gun of that price.
The present basic design of the trigger ( again my opinion ) will never lend itself to becoming a great trigger.
However, it doesn't make the gun inaccurate. It is plenty good enough to do the job.
